  • Our Mission

    Think, Create, Share, Grow

The mission of our school libraries is to create inviting learning environments that inspire and honor curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

In partnership with students and staff, we support and recognize reading as the foundation for students to become skilled in multiple literacies. We strive to ensure that students become successful lifelong learners.

  • Bee-bots take over the library!

Posted by Kathy Lawrence on 12/20/2017

Between the Thanksgiving and Winter breaks Mrs. Lawrence collaborated with Hiawatha's Educational Technologist, Mr. Tamayo, to teach kindergarteners and first graders the basics of coding using bee-bots.  These cute little programmable robots gave students opportunities to develop a string of commands and test it.

Using customized mats we gave teams of two and three students challenges which increased in difficulty over the month long unit.

By the end of December students had to "drive" their bots to very specific spots, avoiding obstacles along the way.  If they landed where they shouldn't they had to start back at the beginning.  Hard work, and great fun!

Mrs. Kathy Lawrence

I have been the librarian at Hiawatha since 2001, and an educator since 1978--in both elementary and high school.

My passion for reading and language arts led me to the library after seven years as a classroom teacher.  I love that my job allows me to support your child in their reading and writing; I have seen the power of books to transform lives!  I am also committed to helping students navigate the incredible amount of information available to them today, and to become responsible digital citizens.
