Welcome Letter & 2019 Supplies
Dear Discovery Team Students,
We hope this finds you enjoying a wonderful summer! We look forward to seeing our returning 8th graders and getting to know our newest members of Team Discovery. Enjoy these fleeting days of summer and we look forward to a year of Discovery as school begins Wednesday, August 28th.
As you know our team will have two core academic teachers. Andrew Corran will be teaching humanities on Team Discovery. In the coming year we will study US History from the beginning of the American Revolution to the US Civil War. We will investigate themes including systems of government and the citizen’s role in a democracy, the Constitution, western expansion, and social justice. Throughout the year, we will focus on using evidence to support claims.
During the first part of the year in science we will focus on topics in biology. We will begin the year learning about cells and body systems, then move on to cell division, genetics, and the heredity of traits. Physical science topics will include gravity, electrical and magnetic forces, and waves. We will practice the scientific method throughout the year and focus on making claims from the data we collect and analyze.
On Discovery we will have one group of 8th graders and one group of 7th graders. Our students will spend their time on Discovery grouped by grade and each class will happen once a day for about an hour. During the rest of their day Discovery students will be with students of the same grade level from other teams.
On the first day of school please have your completed summer math assignment. (Extra packets are available in the office).
In addition, the following is a suggested list of materials:
