Instruction & Curriculum

Instruction includes a mathematics block, science, social studies, health, physical education, art, music, library, and the four essentials of balanced literacy (read aloud, word study, readers’ workshop and writers’ workshop).  Our music program supports band starting in 4th grade and chorus beginning in 5th grade as well as individual instrumental lessons.

Technology is integrated within classroom instruction with access to a computer lab.  Students in grades 5-8 are issued individual devices such as Chrome books to support learning.  Our library features a large selection of books, a maker’s space approach to projects, integration with classroom instruction, and frequent author visits.

Westford School uses Common Core State Standards to guide instructional decisions, a workshop model of instruction promoting student discourse, and core math and literacy programs for common language and vertical alignment.

Thus, teachers focus their instruction on the essential standards necessary for students to meet high academic expectations.  On-going assessments inform educators about the needs of each child so that instruction can be modified accordingly. Westford School is committed to the principles of a Multi-Tiered System of Support in order to meet the needs of each child.

Learning specialists work collaboratively with classroom teachers and parents to support learning and student growth.  We report out on student progress  each trimester.  Fall parent conferences, student led parent conferences in the spring, and multiple student performances, such fine arts night and the science fair, provide tangible evidence of student engagement and learning.
