05.02.22 EWSD COVID-19 Update
With the number of COVID-19 cases increasing again across the state, the EWSD is encouraging students and staff to wear a mask, but not requiring it. As a community, we must respect each individual's choice as they weigh their own personal level of risk.
EWSD school nurses will continue to conduct diagnostic testing in school using LAMP or antigen tests. Take-home antigen (rapid) tests are still available to students, staff, and their households on an as-needed basis or at the clinical discretion of the school nurse, consistent with Health Department guidance. Please contact your school nurse if you need test kits for home use.
We also have KN95 masks available by request. Students and staff are always welcome to wear a mask at school.
Please remember that the most important thing you can do is to stay home when experiencing any symptoms. We are moving into allergy season. If your child has seasonal allergies that show symptoms that could be consistent with symptoms of COVID, please provide a note from your child's healthcare provider.
Thank you for all you do to help keep our school community healthy.
With gratitude,
Beth Cobb

04.14.22 EWSD COVID-19 Update
As we see a rise in COVID-19 cases across our EWSD community, both in school and across our area, we would like to provide you with information for self-care going into April break.
Please monitor for symptoms of COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status. Symptoms include: fever, headache, chills, body/muscle aches, cough, runny nose, loss of taste and/or smell, shortness of breath, and sore throat. A person may also experience nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
If you or anyone in your family starts to feel sick, it is recommended that you test for COVID-19. Testing locations and other information can be found here. Additionally, test kits are available at each school before break and when we return to school after break. They can be accessed by contacting the health office.
If you or your student tests positive for COVID-19, you should stay home for five days. After break, your student may return to school if their symptoms have improved and they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of medicine that reduces fevers. You may want to consider contacting your healthcare provider to see if additional treatment for COVID-19 is recommended.
Here are some ways to keep your family and others healthy during this time:
- Stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations
- Get a test for COVID-19 when symptoms occur
- Stay home if you are sick
- Cover your cough and sneezes
- Wash hands
- Consider masking in indoor spaces, especially if someone you spend time with is immunocompromised or is more likely to get very sick with COVID-19
For more information on COVID-19, contact the Vermont Department of Health at 802-863-7240.

04.01.22 EWSD COVID Updates
Dear EWSD Families and Staff,
As of April 4, 2022, by direction of the Agency of Education, and as public health conditions in Vermont relative to COVID-19 continue to improve, the Staff Assurance Testing and Test at Home programs will be discontinued in Vermont schools. With the conclusion of these testing programs, staff and student households are reminded that they can make an appointment at a State of Vermont testing site to obtain up to eight rapid antigen tests or one LAMP test, per appointment, for their use at home.
While we no longer provide daily updates of positive cases, if we see an increase in any of our schools, we will notify that particular school community.
Please remember that the most important thing you can do is to stay home when experiencing any symptoms. We are moving into allergy season. If your child has seasonal allergies that show symptoms that could be consistent with symptoms of COVID, please provide a note from your child's healthcare provider.

03.17.22 EWSD COVID-19 Updated Guidelines
The Vermont Department of Health has updated its guidelines to reflect the decrease of COVID-19 cases in our community. This update allows our schools to simplify our testing procedures. It also gives new guidelines for isolation and quarantine for those who test positive or are a close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.
If you test positive for the COVID virus:
- Stay home and isolate for five days
- You can leave your home after five days if your symptoms have improved AND you have had no fever for at least 24 hours without the use of medicine that reduces fever
If you are a close contact to someone who has tested positive for COVID and are up to date with your COVID vaccine:
- You do not need to quarantine
- If you develop symptoms at any time, get tested
If you are a close contact and are unvaccinated:
- You do not need to quarantine
- No earlier than day four, take two antigen tests 24 hours apart (or longer) OR
- On or after day five take a PCR or LAMP test
- Contact your school if you need antigen test kits
- If you develop symptoms at any time, get tested
EWSD School Guidelines
- Students and staff should stay home if they are ill
- It is recommended they undergo COVID testing. If COVID testing is not done, the individual may return to school if their symptoms have improved, there is no diarrhea/vomiting for 24 hours or longer, and they have been fever-free for 24+ hours without the use of medication.
- If symptoms develop during the school day:
- With permission, a LAMP or rapid test will be administered in the school health office. If there is no consent, the individual will need to go home and remain out of school until symptoms have improved, there is no diarrhea/vomiting for 24 hours or longer, and they are fever-free for over 24 hours without the use of medication.
- If the test is positive, the individual will go home and follow the isolation guidelines for a positive test
- If the test is negative but the student is unable to remain in school, the school nurse will consult with the staff member or parent/guardian regarding further testing and the return to school
- If an antigen or LAMP test is negative, symptoms are mild and can be attributed to another diagnosis, the individual may remain in school. This decision should be made by the school nurse.
- Symptomatic and COVID-positive individuals will be asked to wear a mask while waiting to go home.
Rapid (antigen) test kits are available in each school. Please fill out this form for PreK-5 students or contact your school nurse if you are in need of test kits.

03.04.22 EWSD to Make Masking Optional Starting March 7
Dear EWSD Families,
As a District, we will be moving to optional masking beginning on Monday, March 7. This will be in effect at all EWSD schools PreK through 12 and on our school buses.
The rationale for this decision and timeline is as follows:
At the Governor’s press conference yesterday (March 3), the Vermont Agency of Education informed the public that they are transitioning from school-specific COVID-19 prevention and mitigation recommendations to general health guidance for all Vermonters. This means that schools will no longer have different rules or recommendations than the general public. Also, the VT AOE, stated that optional masking is no longer associated with vaccination rates.
The CDC is now making COVID-19 recommendations based on “Community Levels.” Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. Chittenden County is classified as medium, which means that the CDC no longer recommends universal indoor mask-wearing in PreK-12 and early education settings.
Both CDC and State officials have stressed that at this stage in the pandemic, universal masking is no longer necessary from a risk perspective. The decision to mask has shifted to an individual level and should be based on specific circumstances and risks.
We want our students, families, and staff to know how important it is to respect one’s personal choice to mask. The District is working to make the transition to optional masking as smooth as possible and will make sure that students understand and respect the choice to wear a mask or not. We ask families to help make this message clear. Please have conversations with your children to support their respect and kindness towards others' choices, whether to wear a mask or not.
To all EWSD adults and students in our community, please be mindful that everyone’s situation is different and has unique variables. While some may feel relief and happiness to see an end to universal masking, the endemic phase of COVID-19 may be scary and nerve-racking for others.
Lastly, we need to stress the importance of staying home when sick. Anyone with symptoms should not come to school. We will continue to send daily case counts for one more week, with our last one going out on March 11 (as per VT AOE guidance, which ends on March 14).
We currently have rapid tests available to anyone who needs them. Have your student pick up a kit from the school nurse or for parents of PreK-5 students please fill out the form on our COVID EWSD website. The AOE will be phasing out testing options for schools, we will keep you updated as we learn their timeline.
Thank you for your continued support and we will keep you updated on any further changes.
Sincerely,
Beth Cobb
EWSD Superintendent

03.01.22 EWSD COVID/Masking Update
Dear EWSD Families,
As you have heard from Governor Scott, Vermont is moving into the next phase of the pandemic. Prior to winter break, it was announced by Secretary of Education Dan French, that the guidance that has been in place pertaining to mask-wearing in schools could end effective February 28 when schools reached the 80% vaccination rate.
Subsequent to this announcement, the CDC came out with new guidance around mask-wearing in indoor spaces in counties with low-medium transmission. The Vermont Department of Health has yet to adopt this change. As of February 25, Chittenden County’s level is indicated as medium.
The timing of the CDC announcement was not ideal for the EWSD, as we have been on break. Just as we have done for the last two years, when the CDC makes adjustments, we wait (anxiously) to see how our state will adopt the new guidance, and then we follow the AOE recommendations.
Yesterday, an email from Secretary French stated that Vermont is currently evaluating the CDC’s current guidance on wearing masks indoors and on school buses. By the end of this week, the AOE will have an announcement on the next steps in the public health recommendations for schools.
What does all of this mean for the EWSD?
- We will return from break wearing masks. I know many of you are worried we will see an increase in COVID cases due to travel over break. We will watch this closely.
- The EWSD will work during the next two weeks transitioning to making masks optional.
- This entails teaching our students what the transition means for everyone - giving the message that it is okay to still wear a mask! And to still be cautious of symptoms and stay home when you don’t feel well.
- Posting new signage in the buildings.
- Creating new guidance or consideration for field trips, visitors, large functions, etc.
- We will have take-home antigen tests available at our schools
- Students in grades 6-12 can pick up tests at their school health office and PreK-5 families can request a kit by completing the online request form on our EWSD COVID information page. If you don’t have access to do this, please reach out to the school nurse or principal. If requested, the test kits will be placed in the backpack of PreK-5 students.
After we make this transition to a mask optional school and workplace, we anticipate that many EWSD students and staff will continue to wear masks. As a community, we must respect each individual's choice as they weigh their own personal level of risk. Vaccination remains a key mitigation measure and there are many opportunities to get your first, second, or booster dose.
Once again, thank you for your efforts in helping us keep the EWSD community healthy and safe. I know together, as a community, we can make this next transition a success, and let’s hope that Chittenden County transmission rates stay within the low-medium range. We can do this!
With gratitude and appreciation,
Beth Cobb
EWSD Superintendent

02.15.22 EWSD Masking Update
Governor Scott announced today that beginning on Monday, February 28 the mask mandate for schools in Vermont with an 80% vaccination rate or higher will no longer be in effect.
It is important to note that:
- The change in the masking requirement is only for schools with a vaccination rate of 80% or higher; all other schools must continue masking in accordance with the Governor’s guidelines.
- The State will verify each school’s vaccination rate, but this data is not yet available. Superintendents have not been informed as to when this data will be provided.
Similar to other COVID policy and guidance changes, this announcement requires us to pause, consider our local context, review the written guidance, and then provide you with more detailed information as to how the change will be implemented.
Once we receive the verified vaccination rates, written guidance, and our questions are addressed, we can begin developing an implementation plan with other superintendents in the region. After those steps are completed, we will share further information with you as we move to the next iteration of our COVID-19 operating environment.
In the meantime, we intend to continue to come back from winter break wearing masks in each of our schools. If we have the information we need to create an implementation plan and the number of positive cases has not spiked after winter break, we will then be prepared to follow the Governor’s guidance as early as mid-March.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Beth Cobb
EWSD Superintendent

02.15.22 Take-Home Antigen Tests for Winter Break for Students
The Vermont Agency of Education has supplied the EWSD with antigen test kits for students to use before they return to school after winter break (February 21 - March 1). The kit includes two tests and students are encouraged to test twice (at least 24 hours apart) in the days before returning to school following winter break. This testing is voluntary and not required for students to attend school.
For PreK-8 students, the kits will be delivered to the student’s classroom, for CTE they will be delivered to individual programs, and for EHS they will be given out during blocks three and four on Wednesday. If an EHS student does not receive the test kit, they can pick one up from their advisory or at the health office.
We ask that you please report any positive cases to your school nurse, who can also answer any questions that you may have.

01.24.22 PLEASE READ - EWSD COVID Testing Update
Dear EWSD Families and Staff,
This winter, given the widespread and highly transmissible Omicron variant, schools must again adjust their prevention and mitigation strategies so that they can remain open for in-person instruction and maintain a safe and healthy environment for students and staff. We have been directed by the Vermont Agency of Education (AOE) to adopt new prevention and mitigation strategies. This decision is supported by Vermont pediatricians (view this recent webinar around the COVID policy changes in Chittenden County).
The following steps will continue to be vital in helping to limit the spread of COVID-19:
- Stay Home When Sick: Students and staff who are sick with COVID symptoms, should stay home. This is the most important prevention strategy.
- Stay Home When Positive For COVID: If students or staff test positive for COVID, the school nurse should be notified. The school nurse will advise students and staff on when they can return to school. Please visit the Vermont Department of Health for additional guidance if you test positive for COVID. Report at-home test results (positive or negative) to the Health Department using this online form.
- Wear a Mask: Wear a well fitted mask.
***This update is to inform you on what the changes will look like in our schools. The EWSD will make the following changes to its COVID-19 procedures effective today (Monday, January 24th).
NOTIFICATION
- School learns of a positive case for a student or staff member
- School notifies families that there is a case in their child’s class. Classmates are considered ‘presumptive contacts.’ Schools will no longer conduct contact tracing.
- Adults and/or high school students who test positive should reach out to their close contacts to notify them
- NEW - The EWSD will send out an email each day at 5 p.m. to all families and staff in the District with a list of new positive cases for that day. For grades PreK-8, it will also provide the name of either the classroom teacher or team. For CTE, the name of the program will be provided, and for EHS, you will continue to be notified of the total number of cases for that day. The last possible exposure date will also be listed for each case.
TEST DISTRIBUTION
- Surveillance testing and in-school Test to Stay (TTS) programs will be replaced by the Test at Home program (Test at Home FAQ). Students and staff who are presumptive contacts from school and/or community exposure will be offered take home antigen test kits from their school. Please note the AOE has stated that schools should not monitor compliance of test pick up nor the use of test kits.
- Students in grades 6-12: Can pick up their test kits at their school health office
- Students in grades PreK-5: If families of PreK through fifth grade students would like a take home test kit, they should complete the online request form located on the EWSD COVID information page. Test kits will be placed in student backpacks.
- Staff: Can test in their school health office. When supplies are available, staff may pick up test kits from their school health office and test at home.
- School districts around the state are reliant on test kits being supplied by the AOE. We will need to be prepared and shift our strategy if the supplies do not keep up with the need.
TESTING RECOMMENDATIONS
- Presumptive contacts will receive a different number of test kits depending on their vaccination status. Individuals with presumptive school contact do NOT need to quarantine during their testing periods.
- If Fully Vaccinated*
- Will receive two tests
- Tests should be used on the fourth and fifth day after presumed exposure
- If Not Fully Vaccinated
- Will receive five tests
- Tests should be used for the next five consecutive days after presumed exposure
- If Have Had COVID within the last 90 days
- No testing recommended
*Fully vaccinated means that you have either completed a full vaccine course and received a booster; or completed your Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series within the last five months; or completed your Johnson & Johnson vaccine within the last two months; or are 5-17 years old or are enrolled in a K-12 school and have completed your Pfizer vaccine series.
QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATIONS
- Individuals with presumptive school contact do NOT need to quarantine during their testing periods
- Individuals who are close contacts to a case outside of school are recommended to quarantine according to the Vermont Department of Health guidance, but may attend school according to the above testing protocol
- For individuals with continuous household exposure (someone in the house tested positive):
- If the individual is fully vaccinated, it is recommended that they test every three to five days while their household contact is in isolation and for five consecutive days after the household contact ends isolation
- If the individual is not fully vaccinated, it is recommended that they test daily while their household contact is in isolation, and for five consecutive days after the household contact ends isolation
- Staff and students may come to school during this period as long as they do not have symptoms and test negative using take home antigen tests
DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AT SCHOOLS
- School nurses will have access to rapid testing (antigen and/or LAMP) for the following purposes:
- School-based testing for students or staff with symptoms at school
- School-based testing for families who need school assistance in administering tests in response to presumed exposure
- If antigen tests are used, school nurses will conduct one test in school and send a second test home with the family to be completed approximately 24 hours after the first test
- Schools will require consent from families to do in-school testing
- If a student does not attend school due to illness, their parent/guardian may access two rapid antigen tests by picking them up at school. These tests should be taken as close to 24 hours apart as possible. Staff may do the same.
- Symptomatic students and staff who have two negative tests, have symptom improvement, and are fever free for 24 hours may return to school
Families are also encouraged to request the free federal rapid tests online.
