EWSD Hosts Nutrition Advisory Group Meeting 11.13.18

The Essex Westford School District welcomed nearly 60 parents and community members on November 8 to participate in the first Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Nutrition Advisory group meeting.

Karen Zidovsky, the EWSD Wellness Coordinator, kicked off the evening by providing an introduction to the WSCC model. Guest speakers included Rebecca Mitchell from Hunger Free Vermont and Abbie Nelson from the Northeast Organic Farming Association. EWSD Child Nutrition Managers Scott Fay and Andrew Peet, and EWSD Farm to School Coordinator Meghan Martin, shared the Child Nutrition Services/Farm to School goals for this year and invited the Nutrition Advisory group participants to partner with them to achieve these goals and explore the future direction for EWSD in all aspects of nutrition environment and services.

The presenters helped provide insight for the participants around USDA guidelines, food insecurity/insufficiency, Farm to School opportunities, and fiscal realities currently in place. The participants took part in a table talk exercise where they were able to discuss their personal interest in nutrition as well as provide feedback and insights on numerous food-related ideas: composting, school gardens, menu planning, grab and go meals, food insufficiency, and many others.

EWSD will compile and prioritize the feedback that they received and the advisory group will meet again during the third week of January to look at next steps.
