Currently, Ambassador Ford is a scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington and a fellow at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs at Yale University.
He served for 30 years in the State Department and Peace Corps, finishing his career as the U.S. Ambassador to Syria from 2011 to 2014. Ford is a career diplomat who has been honored for his leadership and courage.
For his leadership of the American Embassy in Damascus, he received a Presidential Honor award and for his work in Syria, he received the State Department's highest award, the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award. For his defense of human rights in Syria, he received the 2012 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage award.
Ambassador Ford also served as the U.S. Ambassador to Algeria, the Deputy Ambassador in Iraq, and the Deputy Ambassador in Bahrain. During his career, he also served in Cameroon, Egypt, and Turkey.
