Drescher Named EWSD Director of Technology and Innovation

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. - Peter Drescher has been named the Director of Technology and Innovation for the Essex Westford School District (EWSD). Drescher, who steps into the role previously held by Vince Gonillo, started at the District on February 17, 2020. 


Drescher joins the EWSD after spending the last 12 years as the State Director of Education Technology for the Vermont Agency of Education, where he was a state and national education technology leader with extensive experience in developing education policy to support professional practice in the implementation of digital learning throughout Vermont’s school districts. 


“Our district is very lucky to have someone of Peter’s caliber join our team,” said EWSD Superintendent Beth Cobb. “Peter brings a wealth of knowledge and experiences that we can learn from. His reputation is known state-wide as well as nationally, and we look forward to his leadership.”


While at the Agency of Education, Drescher created and led programs serving the greater education technology community in Vermont. He developed state initiatives focused on personalized and proficiency-based learning supported by technology in schools, while also creating a system for schools to better manage student data privacy.  


Drescher is an innovative problem-solver who has established multiple programs to further education policy initiatives such as the launch of the Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative, while he also developed innovative grant programs that focused on makerspaces and 3D modeling. 


A professional development leader who has inspired educators across the state to accelerate the integration of technology into the school curriculum, Drescher re-established a vision to increase the ranks of teachers seeking a computer science endorsement. 


Outside of his work with the state, Drescher designed and conducted technology audits for schools nationwide. Working with national colleagues to develop criteria, he led focus groups and interpreted survey data to arrive at an overall picture of the current state of the district with regard to the efficacy of their technology program.


Drescher has spent time as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Vermont (College of Education/Social Services) and Union Institute and University. A Plymouth State College graduate, he also earned his Master of Arts in Education Technology from Union Institute & University. 


He has served on numerous boards, both state and nationally focused, and has been a long-time member of the nationally based State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA).
