Jemima Talbot Joins the EWSD Board

EWSD Board

Jemima Talbot joined the Essex Westford School District Board, after being elected on June 7, 2022. Get to know the newest member a little better in this quick Q&A:

Tell us a little bit about your background and what specific strengths you bring to the EWSD Board?
Jemima Talbot (JT): I am a born Vermonter but have lived more than half my life in the Caribbean, South America, and in various states in the U.S. My travels have made me aware and appreciative of the tremendous strengths and opportunities we have in Vermont. I am grateful to live in a town that prioritizes education and values children and families. I have a Master's degree in Public Health, I am bilingual, I have worked on diversity, equity, and inclusion committees, and I am used to working with parents and the community at large. I have also worked in schools. I am comfortable interacting with stakeholders from differing backgrounds. I am methodical, systematic, and invested in listening to and learning from people from different backgrounds. I care deeply about the well-being of children and the quality of the public education they receive. I am a proud member of the LGBTQIA community and am committed to making schools safe and welcoming for all children.”

What motivated you to want to become an EWSD Board member?

JT: As a single mom of a biracial daughter, I wanted to join the EWSD School Board because I want to make sure that school is safe and affirming for my daughter and other students. I have volunteered in my daughter's classroom every year she has been in school- and she is now in 6th grade. I am in touch with her teachers- past and present- and have been able to get to know several Essex schools as a parent volunteer. As a small business owner, I interact frequently with parents and other local business owners and am aware of concerns, frustrations, and sources of pride that parents and community members feel about our school district. It means a lot to me to be able to serve my community in this capacity.”

What is the most important responsibility of a school board?
JT: The most important responsibility of a school board is to work with the Superintendent to monitor and manage all aspects of a school system to make sure student education and achievement are prioritized.”
