It Takes a Village: Voices for Equity & Belonging

Today we live in an increasingly diverse community that is served by the Essex Westford School District. However, as our community has grown, the backlash against various groups has increased as well. Recently, circumstances such as the controversial discussion over transgender bathrooms, a racially motivated threat against a local store, and the disagreement regarding flying the Black Lives Matter flag at two EWSD schools make it clear that there is still much work that needs to be done regarding community relations.

In order for us to have a strong community, we must come together to build our shared understanding about different experiences and perspectives from our community members. Therefore, we ask you to join Voices for Education (VFE) and our community partners at Essex Middle School from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on December 1 for a discussion about our experiences regarding the community that we live in. Lunch will be provided following the event.

The event aims to promote a better community where everyone can be successful. The event will feature a series of group discussions with other participants, in order to promote an understanding regarding the numerous unique viewpoints throughout the community. These conversations will be informed by a brief presentation about changing demographics and other local trends.  The event will offer childcare, as well as assistance to help offset the costs associated with transportation or other related expenses in order for participants to be able to attend.

We encourage anyone to come to this event to share their unique stories and experiences. Your perspectives will directly help in developing plans for a better, more welcoming community in the future. While we aim for this work to transform the community, the event requires participants in order to be successful. With your voice, we hope to build momentum for a better, more inclusive tomorrow.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP online. If you have any questions, you can contact Ben Dickie at: bdickie@ewsd.org or 857-2001.
