Superintendent Report - January 2019

On January 15, the Vermont legislature will pass a resolution declaring January as School Board Recognition Month. “This is a time to promote awareness and understanding of the important work performed by school board members,” said Nicole Mace, Executive Director of the Vermont School Boards Association. The Essex Westford School District is joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate School Board Appreciation Month to honor local board members for their commitment to communities of Essex and Westford.

As superintendent, I’d like to personally thank each member for their devotion to our children.  I am grateful that they bring the voice of the community to important education decisions.

Budget Season: Brian Donahue, Deb Anderson, and I have been reviewing staffing for budget purposes. All directors have been meeting with Brian and have their budgets submitted. We are looking forward to our budget board work sessions.

Odds and Ends:

  • K-5 Report cards will be going home this month. The report card is newly aligned across the district and housed on our new data system.
  • Beginning in 2020, Personalized Learning Plans are a graduation requirement for all Vermont seniors. The PLP ‘why’ is posted on our website and reads: In the Essex Westford School District, Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs) serve to give students ownership over their learning and create a personalized pathway to their future. Student goal setting and reflection are primary aspects of this process.  In the Essex Westford School District, we believe that each of our learners is unique and brings multiple interests, talents, and skills to the table. Act 77, through the use of PLPs, sets forth the mechanism to allow these interests to become part of each student’s learning pathway. This formal plan and process involves self-assessment by the student to set and achieve learning goals based on personal, academic, and career interests.
  • A new EWSD logo is soon to be revealed. It is being designed by a CTE student.
  • An EWSD video is in the process of being made. It will highlight the learning opportunities offered throughout EWSD, what makes us a special place, and our vision. Our intent is to have the video complete and ready for viewing by the end of March.
