Middle School Choice Activities

Developmentally, middle school students thrive in an environment of both choice and structure. Westford Middle School Students have a choice in elective courses. This is an opportunity for students to explore their interest and engage with a vareity of peers.

Elective Choice Descriptions

Algebra
Algebra is an additional class as all 8th grade student also take 8th grade math. Students who demonstrate proficiency in this class have the choice of taking Geometry at EHS in 9th grade. Students who choose to take Algebra in 8th grade will also be well prepared for success in Algebra at EHS.

Advanced Studio Art
Participate in art studio lessons using problem solving skills in a variety of 2D and 3D media: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, clay and more. Study art culture and learn how appreciating art can help us understand ourselves and others. You’ll have the opportunity to make personal choices about the creation of their art.

3D Art
Explore a variety of media including clay, paper mache, plaster, up-cycled art and more. Participate in a wide range of experiences using sculpture techniques designed to build artistic and creative confidence.

Band Plus Lesson
Students who have been enrolled in band for at least one year or have experience playing with an ensemble. Students continue to work on skills needed in an ensemble such as blend and balance, while enhancing particular knowledge of their own instrument. Three classes of band plus one class of small group lesson.

Book Club
Small group reading club with a focus on Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award nominated books

Chorus
Do you love to sing? This course is for you! Sing a variety of repertoire including spirituals, pop, broadway, folk song, and more while learning techniques to expand your vocal skills and build your knowledge of musicianship. Students have opportunities to audition for solos and for festivals off campus.

Coding & 3D Printing
Continue your learning about coding from fourth grade Technology class! Learn the basics of 3D printing and practice by creating your own pieces.

Intro French
This class is an introduction to French. You will learn the French alphabet, the numbers, how to write the date and telling time. You will learn how to order food in a café.

French A
This class is an introduction to French. You will learn the French alphabet, the numbers, how to write
the date and telling time. You will learn how to order food in a café. If you want to take French B (5 days a week), you need to take this course in 7th grade

French B
Students who demonstrate proficiency in this class have the choice of taking French II at EHS as a 9th grade student. Students who choose to take French in 8th grade will be well prepared for success in French at EHS. This class is a continuation of 7th Grade French.

Outdoor Recess

Guided Study
Extended time to complete assignments, work on skills and independent reading time

Teacher Assistant
Students will have the opportunity to support an elementary teacher in the classroom. For example, students may be asked to mentor a student, read to a group of students or help prepare materials for class.

Video Creation including Green Screen
Work in small groups to create video projects using iPads, Chromebooks and Green Screen technology. Groups will work on scripts, storyboarding, props, effects, acting, editing and videoing scenes.

A World of Difference
A peer leadership program to create leaders in school. Students will attend field trips and trainings out of school and then meet in school to learn leadership skills. Later in the year peer leaders will lead other students in learning activities around issues such as bullying, racism, and creating a positive school environment.
