Brian Neufeld

Every year, the College of Education and Social Services (CESS) at the University of Vermont, together with Vermont supervisory unions and school districts, the Vermont Agency of Education, and the Vermont NEA, join to honor the accomplishments of our state’s outstanding educators.

This year, Brian Neufeld, a Science Teacher at Albert D. Lawton School was named EWSD K-8 UVM Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

ADL's leadership team spoke of Neufeld's recent accomplishment:

"Brian is an exceptional science teacher. He excels at engaging students in scientific and engineering practices through thoughtful planning for labs that pique student curiosity. Brian's classroom is a hub of hands-on learning and discovery, where students are encouraged to think critically, experiment, and problem-solve like scientists and engineers. His ability to create an environment where students actively participate in the scientific process has not only nurtured a love for science but has also fostered a deep understanding of scientific concepts among his students.

Brian's passion for nature and his commitment to the well-being of middle schoolers are truly inspiring. He understands the significance of outdoor play and its positive impact on student's physical and mental health. Throughout the seasons, Brian introduces his science students to the wonders of our Vermont landscape through nature walks in our woods. These walks not only enrich their knowledge but also provide students with a unique and refreshing educational experience. Over the past summer, Brian constructed outdoor seating in our school woods to ensure that his classes had a comfortable and welcoming space for reflection and discussion during their nature walks. It is a special place for learning!

During the winter months, Brian's commitment to outdoor education remains unwavering. He can often be found with his students gathered around our fire pit, facilitating fireside science chats and overseeing the process of boiling the sap they've collected from tapping the maples in our schoolyard during sugaring season. Brian's dedication to this hands-on outdoor experience demonstrates his deep understanding of the value of creating an engaging learning environment that extends beyond the confines of the classroom. This holistic approach to education has a profound and lasting impact on his students' overall educational experience.
