child nutrition

In June, Vermont’s Universal School Meal Act became law, allowing all Vermont public school students in grades K-12 access to free breakfast and lunch. We encourage all students to take part in the school nutrition program, as increased participation brings funding that allows us to offer high-quality foods, fresh produce, and the ability to purchase more locally!

Universal Free Meals can also support meals sent from home at no cost, as students can receive access to our fresh fruit and veggie bar, low-fat milk, and a string cheese stick. Any items your student does not intend to consume may be placed in the share cooler.

Even though breakfast and lunch will be free, we will need to continue our record-keeping to meet the requirements of the state and federal agencies. We will do this through the use of a four-digit pin that will be assigned to each student. You should have received your student’s pin number in a separate email. If you haven’t, please check your spam folder or search for emails from: childnutrition@ewsd.org

We ask that you please review the pin number with your student and even have some of our younger students practice remembering it leading up to the first day of the school year. As with anything new, until students start to get into the routine of providing their pin number, the lunch lines will move a little slower during the first couple of weeks of school.

Families are still encouraged to fill out a Free & Reduced meal application online, as it may help your family, the school, and the community at large qualify for financial assistance.
