The Essex Westford School District is pleased to announce that Harrison Shulman has been appointed Principal of Hiawatha Elementary School, effective July 1, 2026.
The selection of Hiawatha’s next principal followed a rigorous and inclusive search process designed to reflect the values and priorities of the school community. Building on the process outlined last spring, the District put together an 11-member interview team that included parents and community representatives. Team members participated fully in comprehensive candidate screenings, formal interviews, and the evaluation of detailed written leadership responses.
This collaborative approach ensured that the final decision was informed by diverse perspectives and grounded in the shared vision of the Hiawatha community.
Shulman brings extensive leadership experience and a uniquely global perspective to EWSD. Since 2022, he has served as Principal of Manchester Elementary School (K–8). His professional background also includes educational leadership and teaching roles in Ecuador, South Korea, and Myanmar, contributing to his broad understanding of diverse school communities and instructional practices.
Throughout the hiring process, Shulman distinguished himself through his thoughtful leadership style and demonstrated ability to guide schools through transitions while fostering strong, collaborative cultures. The District is confident that his experience, energy, and commitment to students will serve Hiawatha well.
Kolby Snellenberger will continue serving as Interim Principal through the end of the current school year. The District extends its sincere gratitude to Snellenberger for his steady, caring, and principled leadership. His unwavering commitment has provided essential stability during this period of transition, and his dedication to Hiawatha’s students and staff remains deeply appreciated.
Additional information about transition events and opportunities for community engagement will be shared in the coming months.
