teacher talking to news reporter

On Tuesday, January 23, Essex High School hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil new equipment donated by GlobalFoundries that will be used by students for biochemistry and genetics studies. After the ribbon-cutting, students gave a short demonstration to show how the new equipment works.

Two years ago GlobalFoundries donated $10,000 to the Essex High STEM Academy, which is now being used to build up the infrastructure of the EHS science lab space so that the high school could take on larger and more ambitious projects in-house, without having to rely on the facilities at institutions like UVM and St. Michael’s College.

The goal of the lab space is to be a resource for student research and capstone projects, as well as for teachers in content classes. EHS students will now have the capability to work with different model systems, to extract, process, and analyze DNA, and to go out into the field and collect meaningful data about Vermont’s biology.

It will provide students at EHS with opportunities during their high school years to gain hands-on experience with laboratory procedures and to investigate questions that are personally meaningful to them and the community.
