Founders Memorial School recently won the Gold Excellence in Worksite Wellness Award. The Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in Worksite Wellness was developed by the Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and presented in partnership with the Vermont Department of Health to employers across the state to create a standard of excellence for worksite wellness initiatives. These annual honors provide an opportunity for the governor and health commissioner to thank businesses and organizations for their efforts to support the health of Vermonters and make Vermont a great place to live and work.
On Monday, September 28, beginning at 6 p.m. in the EHS library, all caregivers are welcome to attend Nick Tokman’s caregiver presentation. Nick will share strategies and resources to help caregivers support their students as they navigate challenges they may face in middle school, high school, and beyond.
Fleming student artists have been busy settling into their new art studio space, getting comfortable with studio routines, and mastering foundational techniques like gathering materials and working with watercolors! 🎨🖌️
To kick off the year, students dove into a well-known art room favorite project that explores how art can express personal identity through line, symbolism, and Surrealism. Inspired by artist René Magritte and utilizing a special "All About Me... Lines!" code, students integrated expressive line patterns and personal symbols into their compositions, sharing unique stories about who they are.

The playground area at Westford recently received some big updates! The blacktop/courts were completely replaced and freshly painted, and new playground equipment was installed, including a new climber and slide. Our grounds crew also gave the playground some extra attention by rototilling the area and adding fresh wood chips.
Some of our ADL students recently had the chance to spend time with Hiawatha kindergarteners at Maple Street Park. The older students were happy to lend a hand!

As we settle into the school year, a friendly reminder that EWSD school grounds, including fields and playgrounds, are not open to the public during the school day. Please leave your four-legged friends at home while school is in session and enjoy one of the many other great places in our community to walk your pup. The Vermont Department of Health’s Asthma-Friendly Schools Program annually recognizes schools that demonstrate the strongest commitment to improving and maintaining asthma-friendly policies and practices and promoting good asthma management among students. 🏆 EHS and CTE were honored as gold-level asthma-friendly schools for 2025-26. Nurse Alyssa Jacobs was singled out for her efforts in helping both schools earn this honor.
There will be no school on Friday, September 4, and Monday, September 7. School will resume on Tuesday, September 8.
Several relatives of Thomas Fleming, the school’s beloved former custodian and namesake, stopped by for a tour, including grandchildren and cousins. Many of them also attended Fleming as students themselves! It was wonderful to hear their memories of Thomas Fleming and the time they spent in the building, and to share a little of the school’s history with those who have such a special connection to it.

Members of the EHS Football team recently spent a day at practice with the Essex Chargers Youth Football program, sharing their skills, encouragement, and love of the game with some of our community’s younger players. 🏈 It was a great opportunity for the Hornets to give back and help inspire the next generation of EHS football players.
All incoming ninth graders were able to navigate their schedules, find their way around a new building, and get comfortable a day early as part of ninth-grade orientation on August 25! 🐝🎉
